BCA Criminal History Search

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension runs a separate statewide criminal history database that includes Mahnomen County records. BCA searches return felony and gross misdemeanor convictions from the past 15 years. Each search costs $8 through the BCA criminal history search portal. The full legal name and date of birth are required to run the search.

BCA records reflect what law enforcement agencies reported to the state. They do not include charges that were reduced or dismissed before conviction. MCRO shows the full case record, including non-conviction outcomes. Running a BCA search alongside an MCRO search gives the most complete picture of a person's criminal history in Minnesota. You can run a self-search through the BCA portal to see your own record.

Expungement Process

Individuals with Mahnomen County criminal records may petition to have those records sealed under Minn. Stat. Chapter 609A. Some cases qualify for automatic sealing under Minn. Stat. Section 609A.015 without any court filing. Check that section first before going through the full petition process.

To petition, file the expungement paperwork at Mahnomen County District Court. A filing fee applies unless you qualify for a waiver. Eligibility depends on the offense type and the time that has passed since the case closed. Cases that ended without conviction may be eligible right away. Felony convictions require a longer waiting period. If the court grants the petition, the record is sealed from public view. The Minnesota Courts self-help center has forms and instructions for filing on your own.

Note: Expungement seals records in court systems and participating state agencies. Contact private background check companies separately to request removal of their copies.

Data Practices and Record Access Rules

If a record cannot be released, staff will explain why. A redacted version may be available in some cases. If you think a record is public but have been told it is restricted, you can contact the Department of Administration's Information Policy Analysis Division for an independent review of your request.
