Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) is the free tool for searching Beltrami County criminal records without visiting the courthouse. No registration is required. The system is available 24 hours a day and covers all 87 Minnesota counties from one search interface. Enter a party name, case number, or attorney of record to pull up results. Each result shows case type, charges filed, hearing dates, and the final outcome. Documents filed from July 1, 2015 onward are downloadable at no charge.

A second access point is mncourts.gov/access-case-records/mcro, which links to user guides and an overview of how the system works. The court calendar posts at 7:00 AM each day and is updated hourly, so you can check hearing schedules in real time. The eReminder service lets you sign up for automated alerts about specific case hearings so you do not have to check manually. Public access terminals at the Bemidji courthouse are available free of charge during business hours.

Note: Cases that ended without a conviction do not appear in name-based MCRO searches. You need the case number to retrieve those records. Call Court Administration at (218) 888-5060 if you need help locating a case number.

Getting Copies of Court Records

Beltrami County criminal court records are public unless sealed or restricted by court order. Since July 1, 2023, uncertified copies are free. Certified copies cost $14 per document. Requests can be submitted through the Minnesota Courts copy request portal, in person at Suite 108 at 600 Minnesota Avenue NW in Bemidji, by phone, or by mail to Court Administration.

When submitting a request, provide the defendant's full legal name and case number if you have it. In-person requests are usually processed the same day. Mail and phone requests take longer depending on record availability. Older records may need to be retrieved from storage, which adds time to the process. If you are unsure which documents you need, ask the clerk to describe the file contents before making a formal request. Records that are sealed or restricted cannot be released.

Beltrami County Sheriff and Jail

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office handles law enforcement throughout the county and manages the county jail. When someone is arrested, the Sheriff's Office creates the initial arrest record and forwards it to the county attorney for a charging decision. Once charges are formally filed with the District Court, the case enters MCRO and becomes searchable by the public.

Current and recent jail information is available through the Beltrami County jail page. Arrests made very recently may not yet appear in MCRO because the charging process takes time. If you are looking for someone booked recently, contact the Sheriff's Office directly to confirm their current status. The Beltrami County government website lists all department contacts for other county offices.

BCA Criminal History Records

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension maintains a statewide criminal conviction database that includes Beltrami County alongside all other Minnesota counties. Each BCA search costs $8 and returns felony and gross misdemeanor convictions from the past 15 years that law enforcement agencies reported to the state. Run a search through the BCA criminal history search portal using the subject's full legal name and date of birth.

The BCA database and MCRO show different information. BCA only includes convictions reported by law enforcement. MCRO shows everything filed with the court, including charges that were dismissed or reduced. Together, both searches give you the most complete picture of a person's record. Individuals can also review their own BCA record at any time using the self-check option on the portal.

Expungement in Beltrami County

Minnesota law allows qualifying individuals to petition for expungement under Minn. Stat. Chapter 609A, which seals the court record from public access. The 2023 Clean Slate law at Minn. Stat. Section 609A.015 automatically seals certain low-level offenses without requiring a petition. Cases that qualify under that provision are sealed without any action by the person whose record is affected.

For cases that do not qualify automatically, a petition must be filed with the Beltrami County District Court in Bemidji. Waiting periods run from one to five years depending on the offense and how the case ended. Cases resolved without a conviction may qualify sooner than those with a conviction. Filing fees are required unless you qualify for an income-based waiver. The Minnesota Courts self-help pages provide the forms and plain-language instructions needed to file without an attorney.

After a successful expungement, the record is sealed from public view. Law enforcement agencies may still access sealed records in specific situations. Private background check companies do not automatically update their databases after expungement, so you may need to contact them directly to request removal of the old information.

Data Practices and Court Fees

Public access to Beltrami County criminal court records is governed by Minnesota's Government Data Practices Act at Minn. Stat. Chapter 13. Most criminal court records are classified as public data. Protected categories include sealed records, victim contact information, and some juvenile case data. Court staff apply these rules uniformly to all requests regardless of how they are submitted.

Court fees in Beltrami County follow the Minnesota statewide schedule posted at mncourts.gov. Criminal defendants do not pay filing fees but may be ordered to pay fines, surcharges, and restitution. Civil filing fee waivers are available based on income. Ask Court Administration in Bemidji for the waiver form if you need one.
