Minnesota Court Records Online is available at publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us. Searches are free and open to the public with no account needed. You can look up Waseca County criminal cases by the defendant's name, case number, or a citation number.

Each search result shows who is named in the case, what charges were filed, the current status of the case, and any upcoming hearings. For cases filed on or after July 1, 2015, you can often read and download court documents directly from MCRO at no cost. Older cases are listed with basic information but documents may need to be requested in person or by mail.

The MCRO court calendar posts at 7:00 AM daily and refreshes each hour. For the most accurate hearing times, check on the same day you plan to attend. A public access terminal at the Waseca courthouse provides the same search tools in person. Court staff can also assist with finding records or explaining the request process.

Note: Expunged records, juvenile cases, and files sealed by court order do not appear in public MCRO searches.

BCA Criminal History Database

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension runs a statewide criminal history database covering felony and gross misdemeanor convictions from all Minnesota counties for the past 15 years. A search costs $8 per person. Submit a request at dps.mn.gov/divisions/bca.

MCRO covers Waseca County case details. The BCA covers convictions statewide. If you need a broader picture of someone's criminal history across Minnesota, the BCA search provides that. For a single-county case lookup, MCRO is the simpler and faster option. Both tools are available to the public without restriction.

Expungement of Criminal Records

Minnesota law provides two ways to seal criminal records. Automatic expungement under Minn. Stat. 609A.015 applies to qualifying offenses after a waiting period, with no petition needed. Petition-based expungement under Chapter 609A of the Minnesota Statutes requires filing a formal petition with the Waseca County District Court, notifying affected agencies, and attending a hearing before a judge.

When the court grants expungement, the record is sealed and removed from public MCRO searches. Most government agencies will not be able to access the sealed file. The state's expungement guide at mncourts.gov/help-topics/criminal-expungement explains the full process. Legal aid in the area may be available to help with petitions for those who qualify.

Public Access Rights in Minnesota

Minn. Stat. Chapter 13, the Government Data Practices Act, defines most criminal court records as public data. Any person can ask to see Waseca County criminal case files. The court must provide them or give a specific legal reason for any restriction. This right applies to everyone, whether or not they have a connection to the case.

Records restricted from public access include juvenile proceedings, victim contact information protected under statute, expunged cases, and certain active investigation data. All other criminal court records in Waseca County are open. Searching MCRO or visiting the courthouse window are the two main ways to access them.
