Minnesota Court Records Online, or MCRO, is the primary free search tool for Freeborn County criminal records. Go to publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us and search by name, case number, or citation. No account is required for basic public searches.

Each case record in MCRO lists the charges, parties involved, current case status, and any upcoming court dates. For cases filed on or after July 1, 2015, you can often view and download individual documents directly from the site at no cost. The court calendar posts at 7:00 AM each day and updates hourly, so it reflects current scheduling throughout the day.

If you want to search in person, a public access terminal is available at the Albert Lea courthouse. Court staff can assist if you run into trouble finding a specific case or document. Not all records appear in public searches. Cases that are sealed or expunged, juvenile records, and some restricted data will not show up.

Note: Expunged records, juvenile cases, and files restricted by court order are not visible in public MCRO searches.

Getting Copies of Court Records

Free copies of Freeborn County criminal court records are available in several ways. Uncertified copies became free as of July 1, 2023. For recent cases in MCRO, you can download documents directly at no cost.

Certified copies cost $14 per document. You may need certified copies for legal proceedings, appeals, or formal record verification. To get them, visit the courthouse in person during business hours, mail a written request, or go through the state's online copy request process at mncourts.gov/help-topics/copy-request.

Mail requests should include the full case number, defendant's name, the approximate year of filing, and a description of the documents needed. Attach payment for certified copies. The full court fee schedule is at mncourts.gov/help-topics/court-fees/district-court-fees.

Freeborn County Sheriff's Office

The Freeborn County Sheriff's Office serves all unincorporated areas and works with local police departments in cities like Albert Lea and Alden. The sheriff's website at co.freeborn.mn.us/departments/sheriff-s-office may list jail roster information, department contacts, and local law enforcement resources.

Arrests made by the sheriff's office or local police generate law enforcement records that are separate from court records. Once charges are filed with the District Court, the case becomes a court record and is accessible through MCRO. The two systems, the sheriff's arrest database and the court's case files, are maintained independently.

The Freeborn County website at co.freeborn.mn.us provides access to other county departments and public services.

BCA Criminal History Database

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension maintains a statewide criminal history database. A BCA search costs $8 per person and returns felony and gross misdemeanor conviction data from across Minnesota for the past 15 years. This is separate from MCRO, which shows case-level details for a specific county.

Request a BCA search at dps.mn.gov/divisions/bca. If you want to check whether someone has convictions beyond Freeborn County, a BCA search gives a broader statewide view. For case-specific information in Freeborn County, MCRO is the better tool.

Expungement of Freeborn County Records

Minnesota offers two paths to expunge criminal records. Automatic expungement under Minn. Stat. 609A.015 applies to certain low-level offenses after set waiting periods. No petition is needed. Petition-based expungement under Chapter 609A requires filing with the Freeborn County District Court, notifying affected agencies, and attending a hearing in Albert Lea.

If the court grants expungement, the record is sealed from public view. MCRO will no longer show the case. Most agencies, including the court and law enforcement, will not be able to access the sealed record. The state court system's expungement guide at mncourts.gov/help-topics/criminal-expungement explains both processes in detail.

Legal aid organizations in Albert Lea and the surrounding region may help with the petition at low or no cost. Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services is one resource to check for assistance.

Public Access Rights Under Minnesota Law

Minn. Stat. Chapter 13, the Government Data Practices Act, classifies most criminal court records as public data. That means any person can request to see Freeborn County court records without explaining why. The court must provide access or give a legal reason for any restriction.

Common restrictions include juvenile records, certain victim information, and cases that have been expunged. Beyond those, criminal case files are open. You do not need to hire a lawyer or file a formal motion to get access to a public court record. A simple request at the clerk's window or through MCRO is enough.
