The 8th Judicial District covers a large portion of west-central Minnesota. Meeker County judges may also hear matters in neighboring counties within the district. That is worth knowing if you are tracking a case that involves a hearing at a different location.

The primary tool for finding Meeker County criminal court records is Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO). It is free, available 24 hours a day, and requires no account. MCRO covers all 87 Minnesota counties in a single search interface. You can search by party name, case number, or attorney of record. Results show the case type, charges filed, scheduled hearings, and the final outcome. Documents from July 1, 2015 onward can be viewed and downloaded at no charge.

A second entry point for the system is mncourts.gov/access-case-records/mcro, which explains how MCRO works and links to access options. The court calendar posts every morning at 7:00 AM and updates hourly throughout the day. That means you can check a hearing schedule without calling the courthouse. Public access terminals in the Litchfield courthouse also let you search MCRO at no charge during business hours, and staff are on hand to help if needed.

Note: Cases without a conviction are not searchable by name on MCRO. You need the case number to find those records. Call (320) 693-5230 if you need help locating a case number for a dismissed or acquitted matter.

Requesting Copies of Records

Meeker County criminal court records are public unless sealed by court order. Since July 1, 2023, uncertified copies are free. Certified copies cost $14 per document. You can submit requests through the Minnesota Courts copy request portal, in person at the Litchfield courthouse, or by mail to Court Administration at 325 S Sibley Ave.

Include the defendant's full name and the case number when submitting a request. In-person requests are typically handled the same day. Mail requests may take a week or more, especially if older records need to be pulled from storage. Sealed records and records restricted by court order cannot be released regardless of the request method.

If you are unsure which documents you need, ask the clerk. They can describe what is in the case file without releasing restricted portions. Being specific about what you are looking for helps avoid delays and ensures you get the right documents on the first try.

Meeker County Sheriff

The Meeker County Sheriff's Office handles law enforcement in unincorporated areas of the county and manages the county jail. Arrest records begin with the Sheriff. After an arrest, the Sheriff's report goes to the county attorney, who decides whether to file charges. If charges are filed, the case then appears in the court system and shows up in MCRO.

Keep in mind that recent arrests may not yet be in MCRO. There is a lag between when someone is arrested and when charges are formally filed. If you are looking for someone arrested very recently, contact the Sheriff's Office directly to check jail status and pending charges.

The Meeker County government website lists contact details for all county departments, including the Sheriff, County Attorney, and Court Administration. If you are unsure which office handles a particular question, the county site is a good starting point.

BCA Criminal History Search

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension maintains a statewide criminal history database that includes Meeker County records. A BCA search costs $8 and returns felony and gross misdemeanor convictions reported to the state within the last 15 years. Run the search through the BCA criminal history search portal. You will need the subject's full legal name and date of birth to get accurate results.

BCA records reflect what law enforcement agencies reported to the state. They differ from MCRO in one key way: MCRO shows the full court record, including charges that were dropped, dismissed, or reduced through a plea deal. If you want a thorough picture, run both. The BCA search is also available for individuals who want to check their own record before it comes up elsewhere.

Fees, Data Practices, and Public Access

Criminal case filing fees in Meeker County follow the statewide schedule posted at mncourts.gov. Minnesota's Government Data Practices Act, found at Minn. Stat. Chapter 13, governs public access to government records including court files. Most criminal court records are open to the public. Protected categories include sealed files, victim identifying information, and certain juvenile records. Court staff apply these rules when processing every record request, whether in person, by mail, or online.

Expungement in Meeker County

If you have a criminal record in Meeker County, you may be able to have it sealed through expungement. Minnesota law under Minn. Stat. Chapter 609A allows eligible individuals to petition the court to seal records from public access. Automatic sealing is available for some cases under the Clean Slate provisions of Minn. Stat. Section 609A.015, which took effect in 2023 for certain low-level offenses.

For cases that do not qualify automatically, you must file a petition with the Meeker County District Court. Waiting periods range from one to five years depending on the offense type. A case that ended without a conviction may be eligible sooner than one with a guilty plea. Filing fees apply unless you qualify for a waiver. The Minnesota Courts self-help pages have forms and plain-language instructions for people filing on their own.

An expungement seals the record from public view. Law enforcement and certain licensed agencies may still access sealed records in some situations. Private background check companies are not required to update their data immediately, so follow up with them separately after an expungement is granted.
