Minnesota Court Records Online
Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) is the primary free tool for searching Jackson County criminal court records. No account is needed. Search by party name, case number, or attorney. Results show case type, charges, hearing dates, and case outcome. Documents filed on or after July 1, 2015 are available to view and download at no cost.
Note: Cases that did not result in a conviction can only be searched by case number, not by name. If you know a case exists but cannot find it by name, call Court Administration at (507) 847-4400 to get the case number first.
The court calendar in MCRO is posted every morning at 7:00 AM and updated every hour throughout the day. This is useful for tracking when a case is scheduled for a hearing or a status conference.
Older records not yet in the digital system may require a written or in-person request at the Jackson courthouse. Staff can check availability and let you know the fastest way to get what you need.
Requesting Court Record Copies
Uncertified copies of court records are free as of July 1, 2023. Certified copies cost $14 each. Request copies in person at the courthouse, by mail to Court Administration, or online through mncourts.gov/help-topics/copy-request.
In-person is fastest. The case number helps staff pull the file quickly, but a name search will also work. Mail requests require you to describe the document in detail and include payment for certified copies. Allow extra time for mail turnaround.
Current fee schedules for court filings and document copies are posted at mncourts.gov/help-topics/court-fees/district-court-fees. These are set statewide and apply at every Minnesota district court including Jackson County.
Sheriff Records and Arrest Information
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office maintains arrest records, booking logs, and incident reports. These are separate from district court records. The sheriff's records cover what happens at the time of arrest. Court records pick up once a case is formally filed in district court.
If you are looking for information about a recent arrest that has not yet appeared in MCRO, the sheriff's office is the right starting point. Cases typically enter the court system within a few days of arrest, but the gap can be longer depending on workload and the nature of the charge.
For sheriff records requests, contact the Jackson County Sheriff's Office directly. The office can advise you on what records are available, any associated fees, and whether identification is required for your request.
BCA Statewide Conviction Search
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension runs a statewide conviction database covering all 87 counties. A search costs $8 and returns conviction records from the past 15 years. You need the subject's full legal name and date of birth. Access the BCA search through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety website.
The BCA covers convictions only. Dismissed cases and pending charges do not show. For those, MCRO gives you a more complete view. Use both tools if you want to check across multiple counties at once and then dig into a specific county's full record.
Federal cases are on PACER, separate from both MCRO and the BCA.
Expungement of Criminal Records
Minnesota provides two paths to seal a criminal record. Automatic expungement under Minn. Stat. 609A.015 applies to certain favorable case outcomes without a petition. Petition-based expungement under Chapter 609A requires filing a formal motion and attending a hearing.
When expungement is granted, the record is removed from public MCRO name searches and most background checks. Law enforcement agencies retain access. Certain licensing boards may also keep access depending on the offense and license category.
To begin the process in Jackson County, file a petition with Court Administration at 405 4th St in Jackson. Forms and step-by-step instructions are at mncourts.gov/help-topics/criminal-expungement. Petitions typically take several months to work through the process before a ruling is issued.
Public Access to Records
Criminal court records in Jackson County are governed by the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, Minn. Stat. Chapter 13. Most case records are public once filed. Juvenile records, sealed records, and records with protected parties are exceptions to public access.
Public access terminals at the courthouse let anyone search MCRO and view court records on-site at no cost. No appointment is needed. These terminals are the in-person equivalent of searching from home, with the added benefit of staff nearby if you have questions.
If a record exists but is sealed, Court Administration will confirm that a sealed record is on file without sharing the content. That way you can know a record was created without being given access to restricted material.
For any records question that MCRO and the sheriff's office cannot answer, the Jackson County courthouse staff are the best next contact. They can often point you to the right department or suggest the correct form of request for your situation.
