Searching Online with MCRO
Minnesota Court Records Online, called MCRO, is the free public portal for searching court case information. You can look up Chisago County criminal cases by defendant name, case number, or hearing date. The system shows party names, charges filed, case status, next hearing date, and case history. Documents filed on or after July 1, 2015, are available to view and download at no cost.
Go to publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us and choose Chisago County from the county selector. You can also reach MCRO through the Minnesota Courts help page at mncourts.gov/access-case-records/mcro. Results appear quickly. No account or login is required for basic public searches. The court calendar is posted each morning and updated hourly, which is useful for tracking scheduled hearings throughout the day.
Note: Juvenile records and cases sealed by court order do not appear in MCRO. Minnesota law restricts access to those records, and they are not shown through the public search portal.

Chisago County Sheriff and Arrest Records
The Chisago County Sheriff's Office handles law enforcement throughout the county and maintains public information about arrests and jail bookings. The Sheriff's website at chisagocountymn.gov/departments/sheriff is the starting point for those inquiries. The main county website at chisagocountymn.gov lists all county departments and public data request procedures.
For recent bookings or warrant information, contact the Sheriff directly by phone or visit the office in person. An arrest record does not mean a person was convicted. Court records in MCRO show the outcome of any case that went to the District Court. An arrest that did not result in charges being filed may appear in law enforcement records but not in the court system. If you want to confirm whether criminal charges were actually filed, search MCRO or contact the court directly.
Requesting Copies of Court Records
You can get copies of Chisago County criminal court records in several ways. The easiest option for documents filed after July 1, 2015, is to download them free through MCRO. For older records or if you need a physical copy, visit the Court Administrator's office in person or send a written request by mail.
Certified copies cost $14 each. Uncertified copies are free since July 1, 2023. Certified copies carry the court's official seal and signature, which makes them suitable for use in legal proceedings or when a government agency needs proof of a court record. The Minnesota Courts copy request guide at mncourts.gov/help-topics/copy-request explains the process in detail. Include the case number, defendant name, and a description of the specific documents you want. If mailing your request, include a self-addressed stamped envelope so the copies can be returned to you.
BCA Statewide Criminal History
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension runs a statewide criminal history database that covers all 87 counties, including Chisago. A BCA search costs $8 and shows conviction data going back up to 15 years. You need the person's full legal name and date of birth to run a search. Access the BCA criminal history search at dps.mn.gov/divisions/bca/Pages/criminal-history-search.aspx.
The BCA system is separate from MCRO and shows convictions only, not pending charges or dismissed cases. Results are delivered online. If you want full case detail, including charges that were dropped or cases that ended without a conviction, use MCRO or request records directly from the Chisago County District Court. Both tools are useful, but they give you different kinds of information. Use both if you want the most complete picture of a person's criminal history in Minnesota.
Expungement of Chisago County Records
Minnesota law gives people the ability to seal certain criminal records from public view through expungement. Some records are expunged automatically under Minn. Stat. 609A.015, which applies to petty misdemeanors and certain resolved cases where no conviction was entered. You do not need to file anything for automatic expungement. It happens by operation of law once the qualifying conditions are met.
For records that do not qualify for automatic expungement, you must file a petition with the court under Chapter 609A. Waiting periods before you can petition range from one year to five years depending on the severity of the offense. After filing, the court sets a hearing where a judge reviews the petition and any objections from law enforcement or the county attorney. If you want to petition for expungement of a Chisago County case, file at the Chisago County District Court in Center City. The Minnesota Courts expungement guide at mncourts.gov/help-topics/criminal-expungement has forms, eligibility rules, and step-by-step instructions.
Data Practices and Public Access
Public access to court records in Minnesota is governed by the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act at Minn. Stat. Chapter 13, available at revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/13/. Most criminal court records are classified as public data, which means any person can request and review them. Exceptions include juvenile records, cases sealed by court order, and certain confidential filings where privacy interests are protected by statute.
Public access computer terminals at the Chisago County Courthouse let you search MCRO and review case documents on site. Court staff can help you use the terminals if you are not sure how to find a record. No fee is charged to use the terminals during business hours. If you are denied access to a record, ask the court to cite the specific statutory authority that restricts it. Most routine criminal case records, including charges, hearing notes, and dispositions, are fully accessible to the public without any special request.
